Rhino and Grasshopper

Over the last couple of weeks I have heard a lot about Grasshopper for Rhino. After watching a few videos online I decided to download a trial of Rhino and the Grasshopper plug in. I am now in the process of trying to learn this software. As a beginner, my initial feelings are that it seems a little confusing and not like anything I have used before to model / design. Saying that, I can also see the excellent potential of the product, especially for drawing custom curves etc. For this reason, I decided to explore the software a little further and over the next month will try and learn it, and hopefully in the process get some tutorials / reviews uploaded on here.

First of all I am going to give a small explanation of what Grasshopper is actually used for: “For designers who are exploring new shapes using generative algorithms,Grasshopper® is a graphical algorithm editor tightly integrated with Rhino’s 3-D modeling tools. Unlike RhinoScript, Grasshopper requires no knowledge of programming or scripting, but still allows designers to build form generators from the simple to the awe-inspiring.” In other words, Grasshopper is a design tool for Rhino which can create curves and very custom shapes using algorithms instead of the standard drafting / modeling method.

I personally have never used any software like this before, so the whole concept is very new to me. I have therefore done some research and found some good tutorials and training videos which I wanted to show with everyone. The first video I would have to recommend watching is this 2 hours introduction tutorial provided by Grasshopper3d.com. This site also contains many other useful tutorial and training videos. The forum section on that site appears to be active with some interesting discussions with many knowledgable people vacating them. I have signed up and am waiting to post my first question.

As I’ve said I will be posting updates on my progress with this software and I’ll let you all know what I think. Good luck to anyone else learning the software and I would very much appreciate it if you are an advanced user and have any good tutorials or tips you would like to share!
